The largest portion of milk rice in history had been prepared and served to more than 65,000 people yesterday at Independence Square, in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of world Records as well as commemorate the second oath-taking of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The milk rice which had weighed around 15,000 kilos was prepared at the auspicious time of 1.02pm yesterday. It contained 1200 kilos of rice, 300 kilos of sultanas, 350 kilos of cashew nuts, 350 kilos of jaggery, 1500 litres of coconut milk and 150 litres of honey with added ghee and salt. One hundred and twenty gas stoves had been specially brought to the venue to be used to cook the record breaking portion of milk rice, organizers revealed.

The Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka, the organizers of the event, said that 350 chefs from 50 hotels and hotel schools around the island participated. Head Chef at the event, Pubilis Silva said that it took three weeks to organize the event and one hour to prepare the milk rice yesterday. He said that the total cost was being borne by sponsors.

It is difficult to say how much had been spent on this event but the total cost definitely exceeds Rs. 1 million, he said, adding that the ingredients and utensils had still not been paid for as yet. The Sports Medicine Institute which was responsible for entering the attempt with the Guinness Company to be included in the Guinness Book of world Records said that they would make an appeal to the company to accept the entry as the biggest portion of milk rice ever made. Donald Wijeygunawardena, a representative of the institute, said that it was still unclear as to whether the record attempt would be accepted as the company does not recognize or know of milk rice, but that an appeal would be made to them nevertheless
